  • Jeremiah Owyang Crowdsource’s His Research on Social Networks

There are a million interpretations of the word crowdsourcing, but the term is certainly gaining traction in the online community. Jeremiah Owyang, Sr. Analyst at Forrester Research, recently crowdsourced answers to the question What makes a Successful Marketing Campaign on Social Networks? In an Update to the blog post he said

I’ve thoroughly read the many responses in here, wow this who[le] social media/crowd sourcing thing actually works! I’ve credited those that have added new attributes that I didn’t have, or those who have added additional thoughts to my attributes. For those that made it by providing something I didn’t already have, they’ll get a copy of the report (as a thank you) and I appreciate everyone’s dialog into this topic. I find that crowdsourcing is great for finding the initial ideas (or those that have them) but the real work begins as I head into the research phase and take a deep dive into each of these attributes.

I’ve always been impressed with Jeremiah Owyang’s marketing ability and it’s really fun to watch him use crowdsourcing to facilitate the research he’s doing in social networks.

Crowdsourcing can be used in a lot of different ways, but I would argue that the most common source of crowdsourcing today is tapping the wisdom of crowds for ideas, knowledge and feedback. As I think about it, this type of crowd research isn’t new. What’s changed is the mainstream technology that now allows us to obtain, manage and organize the feedback so much easier. As this becomes more common place, I believe there will be a strong need for solutions that help businesses manage and organize the feedback better and faster than they are currently doing.

Should be a lot of fun to watch Jeremiah unleash the power of crowds in his research. Considering his research is social computing, it’s really nice to see him utilizing the tools he’s studying. I even saw him recently using twitter to crowd source some ideas too.

    1. Jeremiah Owyang says:

Thanks for recognizing this. It’s pretty important for someone that preaches about social media to walk the talk. It’s also efficient way to improve certain aspects of research

      Thanks again.
